Recognising a Client in the Wild

Often we get asked, and I’m not sure why, but that’s swell, if we ever see a client outside of work. And I know the question doesn’t come from a place of wondering, can he please see the person outside of work. What he means is, do we recognise clients out on the street. And what happens if we do.

You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth! Alright. I’ll tell you. We run up to them and wrap our legs around their face and start screaming their name.

Now now, there is no need for sarcasm :-)

What we do is probably NOTHING. Maybe avoid eye contact. Maybe a slight involuntary (unable to hide it) micro expression may flicker across our face as we recognise yours.

But we don’t draw attention to you. We don’t wave and advance towards you. We don’t follow you. We don’t try and see who you are with.

Just as we sincerely hope you don’t do the same to us if vice versa! Hint hint.

We simply ignore your presence the best we can and be one like Snagglepuss, “exit stage left” if possible so we and YOU don’t feel awkward, even.

In a nutshell. Don’t be offended if we don’t look thrilled to see you out in the wild. It’s not personal. It’s tact. And you are very welcome.
